Does anybody here have an apprenticeship at 18 years old?

Everywhere pretty much confirms the fact that I'll be on 2.65 minimum an hour. I literally cant live off that, after travel and expenses etc. I'm trying to build a car and live life and at that wage on full time hours I'll have about 10 quid left.

Anybody have experience with this? Is there anywhere I can go to get a free or at least discounted travel card or something? 25 quid a week extra would help out...

I'm not smart enough to work that out but all of the Apprenticeships I have gone to is £110 minimum a week, BMW said they'd pay closer to the £150 mark.

Technically you are in education is there some kind of discounts for Students outside of London. I get half-rate travel on trains and free travel on buses and my sister who is at Uni gets a discount.

Priorities now mate. Time to knuckle down and start a career for yourself, so don't expect luxuries!. I was only on £3 p/h when I first started out. If you're passionate and keen enough, there are loads of options for getting into work. None of it's gonna be easy unfortunately, but we all have to start somewhere. Just look at yourself in a year or so's time, and hopefully It'll all seem worth while.

I don't think Simon will be happy about that.... ;D

Craig, I've found now that whatever I do apprenticeship or just a Job I'm going to get a very low pay. I think its one of those things that we just have to endure. I try and get as much work as possible, and even had to turn down a cuppa tea and a laugh at Mia the Mini with Jason today.

My first job was installing roller shutters for £1.50p/h and I would often get left in South London after work and have to make my own way home. I still have a payslip somewhere for an 80 hour week. The boss caught me on a bad day when he explained he would not pay me the time to get from South London back to the workshop and he would not pay my fares either. I did not have to finish the week when I told him my thoughts. LOL

All experiences good and bad help you become a well rounded individual.

Noah I will bring my screwdriver next time and poke some holes in your Mini

So true. Thanks Tom! And thanks Tanya, that really means a lot! :-)

I've figured some stuff out with my parents and provided I can get some kind of discount on the travel too then I can have around 70 left which is pretty awesome really. I was keeping double that when I worked in retail but hated it with my OCD and felt as though I was going nowhere.

I'm not talking luxuries really, just enough to keep my car stored, go out for a meal with Simon now and then and the odd spare bit of money for Mini shows and stuff.

End of the day, you come away with a knowledge of whatever you are getting an apprenticeship in (what are you trying to do???) and some money in your pocket!! Can't be better than that! Well.. Apart from just doing the job you love and getting paid some good money for it!! :D

Good luck bud!

When i done my apprenticeship, i was started straight on minimum wage for an under 18, then when i turnt 18 it went up to minimum wage for an 18-21 year old, which was something like £5.75 or something an hour, went up quite a bit when i became qualified, and started learning stuff to earn the company money. When you get qualified, and start gaing more qualifications youll be on decent money. Got a friend that i done my college day release course thing with, he was payed £100 a week as an apprentice, hes now a mastertech at audi earning £30k with a company car, 5 years on.
