Wise Old Elf, your boss sounded like a right prick! So he expects you to make your own way to London, won't cover the cost of travel, and in addition was paying £1.50 per hour? That qualifies as taking the piss. I don't know all the details, but if London isn't your normal place of work and he wants you to get there, he should foot the bill for it.
Some bastards are so tight its unreal.

Good luck Craig. While I accept that on an apprenticeship you should be getting paid less as they are teaching you stuff, there does become a point where they are frankly taking the piss and using you for cheap labour and not much more. Make sure you get all the college days/courses/anything else you are entitled to that justifies the frankly absurd wages of 2 quid an hour. The plus side is you probably won't earn enough to pay much tax.

There are people out there that will take advantage. I personally do not agree with the current apprenticeship schemes as they are open to abuse and are being used as cheap labour as they were 20 years ago when I was on one. You need to make sure you get out of it something of value like proper training. If you are not on a structured training program there is little value. If all you are getting is 'work experience' then there comes a point (I would say max 6 months) when you are adding value to the business and so you should be paid a wage.
I did get an email last year asking if I was interested in taking on an apprentice through the institute I belong to as I am a Limited Company and have been trading for quite a few years. Although it would have cost me nothing I turned it down as I thought I could offer nothing of value to the apprentice. I know of people that have taken people and are using them as free admin clerks; this is very wrong. The Government are using this as a way of reducing youth unemployment.
It is hard when you are young to get any work but you need to ensure you are getting something out of the deal.
Rant over! Be careful out there; most people are genuine but there are a few that will bend you over.
