* blows the dust off a very old topic *

http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/8689-internal-shifter/page__p__92394__hl__gear#entry92394

I bought 2 1/2" drive socket set UJ's and used the female halves to make one joint, cut the selector rod about 3" fromt he gearbox end and weld the ends into the UJ making sure you keep the role pin holes in the same alignment they were in originaly (I made a jig out of a peice of wood and 2 nails). If you don't get them lined up to how they used to be, then the gearstick housing won't sit straight and you'll loose gears.
I cut the rod down a bit to keep the over all size the same once welded up as when it was original. Cut a hole just above the tunel were it joints the bulkhead and conect the UJ end of the shaft to the 'box and the other end back into the gear stick housing. Because the housing has been liften heigher than its normal place, I needed to cut about 5mm off the housing were the steady rod bolts in to compensate for the fact its a fraction closer.
I used the original housing hanger bracket and turned it upside down and bolted it all back inside the car.

I tried another version of it with 2 UJ's, but it didn't work so ignor the UJ nearest the gearstick housing in the pics.

Your talking about the spyker type of setup
hmmm just had a mess about on microsoft paint for ya & knocked up this :

Tricky buisness trying to keep it so as that reverse dosent go to were 5th would be ect... (if there were 5 gears >_< )

Not to scale :D well duh! Well it's not going to really look like the spyker setup at all. Completely different :P. Il do a rough engineering drawing of it tomorrow and scan it on for all to see!

Do worry Noah its gonna look awsome! Aspecially when its all polished and matched to the column ;)

Hey AD, noticed a flaw in your design which I though I should probly point out before you go getting gears backwards :P

I have a feeling your lower rod end needs to be flipped upside down else the linkage will rotate the wrong way.

Funnily enough I have designed something almost identical for a gear linkage! Don't great (crazy) minds think alike

Yeah I just checked my spare linkage

If you look inside yours you'll see what I mean, it's hard to explain

I've also realised that the throw between the gates will be huge if you use a rose joint as a lever to rotate the linkage rod itself, again it's hard to explain but I'll take some photos of the linkage internals tomorrow and try and show you

Oh right ok, only linkage I have is a remote one, so no help there!

Surely the only way the throw is effected is the distance between the support joint (top) and the selector joint ( bottom)?

That's a point, I assumed you were putting this on a rod change 'box!

Are you using a remote box then?
