hi guys, had my mini 6 months now and after much debating i have decided i would like to do an engine swap/conversion. i am yet to decide what though, a R1 engined mini has always appealed to me, the only thing that puts me off is im guessing its quite a hastle to fit? or a b16/b18 engine? im guessing again quite a lot of hastle to fit. my other option would be to buy a 1275 and rebuild it

With an attitude like "too much hassle to fit" this will never get completed, you will end up selling it part converted...we've all seen it many times...not the best way to start, I mean don't be cocky about it but have some faith you can do the build!

Is your 998 even running at its best? it probably just needs a good service!

Any hybrid engine you choose to fit will be hassle, the cc of that engine is irrelevant, an engine is an engine and will still need maintaining but will need some thinking beforehand so it matches what you want from it and how, also the overall look of the car

Some people might say forget the a-series and go hybrid which is fair to a certain point of view but a good a-series doesn't have to cost the earth if all you want is a little bit more poke than what you got, a simple 1275 bored out to 1293 is both good on power and reliability, chuck on a few more goodies and your off

Your a-series was mighty fine Kam! I have first hand experience to back this up, bumbling along! :P ;)

But I have to agree. Clearly no effort has gone into researching any of this logically, it will never happen :closed:

haha yeah your part of an exclusive club Craig that has been in mine, current club is even more exclusive :D

I do hope the OP has the enthusiasm to go ahead with this whether its an a-b-c series or whatever engine goes in but who knows...

Doing the research first is the single most boring thing but it can be the title decider, pick an engine for your needs, read some build diaries and see if it still fits your plans, find out how much work they carried out and ask yourself whether you can do the that or do you need to buy your way out of something, see what problems they hit and how they get around it

Everyone does a build diary for there own reasons, so repay the favour and read some to get an idea first and good luck

the amount of build diaries i read before deciding which route to take was immense, probably 6 months of research before biting the bullet and going for it.
