Oh good lord, here comes the oil debate again! There must have been more threads on here about this subject than anything else!

The majority of people here will recommend a decent quality 20w/50 mineral oil, mainly because as the classic mini engine shares it's oil with gearbox and the closest thing to a thick gearbox oil is therefore needed to preserve the life of the gearbox. Then there are others that will argue that the properties of modern synthetic and semi sync oils are far superior and more than capable of performing that function and so we have the same debate, over and over again!

So sit back, enjoy the debate and be prepared that by the end you will still have no idea which oil to buy!

Penrite 20w50 mineral I think is the best as it lasts much longer than the halfords stuff,

Longer I mean it keeps its golden colour for much longer, but halfords stuff is fine and it's green as said above lol :)

Like most service items they never last forever, I use 2050 Penrite oil and brp6es NGK spark plugs and they both are fine for everyday use, this is on a 1275 carb engine by the way :)

Could try Bosch spark plugs as they might be better quality but are more expensive :(

15w-40, 15w-50 or 20w-50 should all do. Most people use the latter because it's generally cheap, easy to source, aimed at classic cars and you can also buy it with gearbox additives (Millers). In reality, anything non synthetic and of those grades should be fine. Just buy quality oil, not cheap rubbish (Wilkinson and Asda spring to mind).

Dave.
