Don't believe what Halfords, Opie and other places say. Most will recommend 15w40 or something like that. Its not suitable for an engine and gearbox that share oil

20w50 all the way

all A series engines use 20/50 oil, using thinner oils will cause premature gearbox wear.

Years ago I had an OAP engine built for me, road car, was a 1380. The guy who built it, Ian Osborne ran it on Mobile 1, which is what, a 10W / 40 fully synthetic oil? It ran fine for the few years I kept it before selling the car.

The reason it should be a 20w50 is twofold. The A-series engine was designed in the early 50's and the tolerances and clearances are wider than modern engines and the gearbox needs a thickish oil to survive. We are dealing with a 60-year old engine design here and the gearbox is an old design too.
Hence not only a 20w50, but a fully mineral based top quality one such as Penrite, Millers or Valvoline. It needs to be changed very regularly, like not more than 3000 miles between changes.

That is ideal and it preserves the gearbox as well.
