I've been told my mini has what is "effectively" a stage one kit fitted, sports pack alloys and arches, cobra interior, would I have to declare this to insurance? Would it affect it much for a 17 year old?

Yeah, anything that's not standard spec you should really declare as a mod.

Wouldn't even know how to describe it to them as it was on when I bought it, all I know is the arches, alloys, exhaust aren't standard

Ah, I see from you're bio it's a designer. In that case everything you've mentioned so far Isn't standard.

I know it's not standard but I don't know what I legally have to mention, I bought the car how I described it and changed the wheels along with seats that's it. I don't know what's been done or any other information. Seats surely they wouldn't be bothered about? In that case shouldn't people declare things like gaz shocks etc...?

What about with provisional insurance, what would I have to do as it gives no option to enter 'mods'?

any modification and anything non standard/oem needs to be declared to your insurance.

I know of a case where someone had brought a car with them halfords alloys on... they arent a petrol head or car enthusiast at all and didnt know any better... had an incident and insurance wouldnt pay because the alloys were not declared...

what about provisional insurance as I want to learn to drive in the car? How much would the premium go up on normal insurance do you think?

They might not be bothered about the seats until you need to make a claim, then they notice you've got undeclared mods and refuse to pay out.

If its all listed in black and white then there's no argument.

There's also the fact that raceier seats, alloys, ICE etc will make it more attractive to car thieves. Insurers will want to know stuff like that so they can price your premium based on the chances they may have to pay out at some point.

you have to speak with your insurance company... everyone is different and frankly they make it all up as they go along... no claims bonus being such a con for example... "we will give you a discount on a price that we are going to make up anyway"...

declaring the modifications doesnt necessarily mean a higher premium..

How would you declare for e.g. exhaust? I don't know what it is but it's loud so not standard, that's about all I know! I've kept original seats so they can always go back in if they make a big difference:)

Makes no difference if its provisional or not as the policy is on the vehicle and not the driver.
