hiya I'm looking to get a trailer soon and I took my car test in 2010 does this mean I can tow a trailer with a combined weight of 750kg??? so if I had a trailer weighing say 300 I can only take a load of 450kg ?? if so this means I'm gonna need a very light trailer to tow my minis around. the only other option is gonna be to take my trailer license.

anyone shed some light on this please.will be much appreciated

From reading that the answer is no.

Licences held from 1 January 1997

You’ll need to take a practical test to get a B+E entitlement on your licence if you passed your driving test after this date and hold a category B (car) licence.

You’ll need to do this if you want to tow a trailer or caravan heavier than 750 kilograms (kg) when the combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the towing vehicle and the trailer or caravan is more than 3,500kg.

That's the way i read it. So basically a small box trailer will be fine but a car trailer and car will be a no.

ok thanks looks like I'll be taking my license then and I could use a aframe to tow a complete mini and a small trailer for a shell

a trailer over 750kgMAM as long as it is no more than the unladen or ‘kerb’ weight of the towing vehicle (with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg in total)

To me, that means I can tow the full 1.2t my car is rated to (it weighs 1.5t)

A-frame is for recovery only. You can only use them to tow to the next nearest safe location, also the car on the A-frame must be legal, ie. taxed, tested and insured. Its abit of a grey area sometimes, but trust me, my dad had his own recovery firm for many years with the police contract for recovery/removal.

Dolly is another grey area, technically by mounting the two front wheels to the dolly, the car towed becomes a trailer. I think nearly all cars (bar afew) weight 750kgs or more, so the dolly+towed car = trailer weight and you'd be overweight using one of those too. Also, the towed car (trailer) should display the towing vehicle registration and warning triangles and functional lights *easy way to do this is to use a trailer board attached to the towed vehicle*

put simply

your unladen weight of tow car has to be more than fully laden wieght of trailer ie
tow car = 1300kg unladen
trailer weighs=1299kg fully laden

AND the FULLY laden GROSS weight of tow car+fully laden weight of trailer doesnot exceed 3500kg
