you CAN tow unbraked or braked trailers.

A trailer must be braked over 750kgs.

A braked trailer is much more preferred over unbraked where possible.

over 500kg i was told when i did my test

You got told wrong unless it was the particular unbraked limit for a certain vehicle

All trailers over 750 kgs but not more than 3500 kgs must have over-run brakes

Given that most every day cars weigh around a ton, and that an un-braked trailer should not weigh more than half the kerb weight, 500kg is probably a safe thing for driving instructors to tell students to make it easier to understand.

I would say that most everyday cars weigh about 1500 kgs
