I would give Burlen a call and go through spacers with them. There are spacers up to 1" thick I think, and you can always stack them if you just stick a gasket between. Consider how far you can move them back and still have room for an air filter though, there's not a lot of room to start with! Also those little alloy caps on the dampers might hit the bonnet sooner or later!

It's an odd one this, things shouldn't be that tight. You haven't got something like a late subframe mixed with an early steady rod have you? So the power unit is tilted backwards?

Could it also be that somehow the engine is sitting too low??

well I took the steady bar off to see how much movement I would get, not much but enough to get a small amount of extra forward tilt if I use an adjustable steady bar. This would give me a few more mum under the float bowl. When you say late my car is a 67 with, I believe the original two bolt subframe. Not sure about the steady bar that came with it.

It's all back together, the engine is rock solid, new bushes and a rearward steady bar LHS of gearbox so little movemenet. Hopefully I will have enough gap not to have any contact and will run it and see. If I need a bigger gap I can add additional spacer (minispares do a 7.5 mm one) and then if I need more get the adjustable steady bar.

Knackered mounts...but by the looks of how neat the bay looks its daft to put in any squashed mounts.

Also if block or head have been skimmed loads then that would also lower the carb heights....but probably by not alot.

To be honest i'm just trying to eliminate things that haven't been considered that would effect the carb to bulkhead position. If the manifold is right, and the carb and float chamber angle are right then it must be something.

Subframe...is that sitting right? That would also effect the engine height.

If the subframe is out of an automatic it would sit lower.

I was thinking that but twins fit fine with a small bore block using very similar manifolds.

When I said late subframe I was talking about 1992 onwards, if it's a twin bolt this isn't an issue unless as Martin says it's an auto frame.

no, if it was I would have needed special engine mounts
