get somone to stand on the brakes while you undo it, fof you cant get it undone like that with a long breaker bar then cut it off. I presume the new cv comes wit a new nut?

No you do not get a new CV with the nut, however if you buy a new CV you do get the nut as the CV is considerably dearer than the nut, also you will probably find that the CV has a step on the shaft and could be scrap anyway, also check the outer's within the hub if there is any slack it's a new hub as well.

Well managed to get myself a 2meter long bar,

put spare wheel on set it on ground got someone to sit in it holding brake

put it in gear

and ended up breaking the socket.

the car has always been well maintained and the cv's etc where checked when it was restored. the shafts have been out to change the oil seals about a year ago. dont know what to do now.

someone must have loved thier airgun at some point.

Maybe take it to a garage (if you know someone the better) and get them to gun it off

I would try an impact socket with your 2m bar that shouldnt snap the socket :)

Never done hub nuts on a Mini Yet, but the way I do them on every other car (If I don't have an Impact) is to pop the centre cap off the wheel, and then do it while the car is in gear and the handbrakes on. Push down with an open palm, other wise you'll be in A&E for a new set of knuckles.

Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. - Archimedis

Basically, if you still can't get it undone. Go by a bigger breaker bar, or get a piece of scaffold pipe and use it as an extra bit of leverage.

Sounds like you need a 3/4" breaker bar, matching socket, and a loooooong piece of tube/scaffold over the breaker bar.

At this point I would take the whole hub to a local garage. Pop the balljoints, remove the calliper and tie it to the car, and pop the driveshaft out of the CV. Take it all to a garage to gun it off, they will have a vice or press they can clamp the disc into.

+1 on the heat. I have an ally scaffold tube with one end cut off. It's surprising how much it will bend before the nut finally releases sometimes. Hub nuts shouldn't be THAT tight so worth giving a really good check over once its off. Also be prepared for it to go suddenly and make sure knuckles, knees etc etc wont get walloped when it does finally go.
