In rally/race cars for less weight, but I'm looking to get rid to fit a cage.
In race/rally cars the main reason is to make fitting and removal of a cage much easier, the weight loss is negligible but a bonus none the less!

Makes it easier to get in the back at least!
Here's in the back of mine, if you fancy going crazy with the cutting, the guy took out the seat back and put a bar across under the shelf, and there's a fuel pump to the right now.
It did have checkerplate panels behind the seats which were probably heavier than what was there.
here it is with cage in place plus harness bar which uses same bolt holes as the seatbelts.

Yes, lots of side imapct protection gone, and a very large part of the torsional stiffness, so lots of flexing, degraded handling, and ultimately fatigue fractures.. Not the way to do it. That rear bulkhead is very important.

It can be done, so I've been told. Minisport told me the best way was to ratchet the legs to pull them in past the pillar, then bring it in flat into the front and tilt back into the bins. They also told me best to take out the windows just in case! Mine has the bins out and that was headache enough though! Can take some pics later to show what's left.
