I guess some can be stubborn...Not had a problem with a drum screw, but had the door hinge screws resist impact driver, drill bits burning them out...resorted to welder on them

It's the heat of the welding that freed the screw, not the technique of welding on the bolt. The only way to get them out for years was to put the gas welding torch on them, a bit of diesel to cool and they unscrewed.

Just do what everyone did for years, drill the head off.

The screw is there to stop the drum falling off. It must be in the factory during production, as they would never fall off changinfg the wheels.

Oh yeah, I woul use an impact driver first, and wouldnt normally change the screws, and tightening the wheel nuts on is a good idea, if you've got open ended wheel nuts...... which I havent :(

While an impact driver will work occasionally, the head will strip most times. So try the ID if you have one and the go for the drill.

I take it the idea of the wheel nut tightening is to do so with the wheel removed to push the drum on relieving the load on the screw. So what about the plain bit of stud potruding from the drum that will stop the nut bottoming oin the drum?

I didn't have te idea, I was just agreeing, I haven't actually fully looked in to it. And if you push the impact driver into the head of the bolt properly, it won't round unless you are really special

I used an impact driver to free off both rear drums yesterday.  It didn't round the screw head and they were both freed in seconds
