Since its still warm and light, been out on the drive and fitted the new spark plugs / temp gauge sender. Quick refill with coolant, run around the block and gauge is working...wooo!

I think thats all the faults (well once manifold gasket done) fixed which were wrong with the car. All comes in well under £60.

So buying the car, £60 of parts, bit of time....reliable cool car. *excluding radio as that can be removed*

Well did the inlet manifold this morning....found this.....BLOCKED

So cleaned/sorted and refitted with new seal and gasket.

Adjusted and fitted vac pipes etc, refilled coolant, test run......no water leak but idle still high.

Investigate more, appears waxstat isnt working correctly.......need to source one of those.

Went and got some cheap wheels, tried them on the golf....

Need spigot rings to fit correctly.

Also notice the dried on soap, my fault for using the work jetwash to clean it, soap didnt wash off fully and its dried in the heat/sun today.

Looks nice. I like the big bumpers, so may invest in those, but otherwise it will stay fairly standard.

Put a clutch in it, as pedal was high even when adjusted, not so bad when driving but pulling away....argh.

Still awaiting the OSF door interior trim, currently with a courier somewhere.

Got the machine polisher out to do some buffing up.

Ordered a waxstat today so hopefully that will turn up this week.

Still not quite right, so decided to whip carb off and replace all the vac hoses....heres the pile of old ones....

Notice the hole.....this is right behind the carb so not visible without removing.

Finally got the trim i ordered from ebay and fitted that into place....

Couple of wheels had centre sticker things missing, so cheapest ebay stickers in 70mm bought and stuck on. Got creases in as its stuck direct to the wheel centre cap. I looked at an old one, its a sticker on a domed  (domed outwards) metal cap which is stuck to the centre. Oh well looks better than nowt....

Ordered wheel arch trims, 2nd hand genuine set, but when they came they are really faded and damaged in places, so sending back to seller.

Bought a set of reproduction brand new ones instead.

Seem to have a water leak appearing from the back of the coolant flange.....the gasket is £2.50 from VWhertiage, £4.49 on ebay from GSF. So did some searching for part numbers, found the full flange and gasket on eurocarparts for £3.24, so ive ordered a thermostat aswell. Gives me an excuse to renew the anti freeze before winter.

Great to see these being rescued, my dad had one when I was very young and I fondly remember having to hold the headlining up while he was driving to stop it falling on him... In the end we had to scrap it because the piston rings had gone and the scrappage scheme was too tempting. Anyway, great work!

Looks nice.

Replaced coolant flange on front of block and fitted a thermostat today after work, now leak free and gets upto temp quicker.
