Changed the coolant temp switch too!
The fan on my mini is deffo the right way around blowing the air through the rad and out through the wing. The oil was changed only 3 days ago for good quality 20/50 and hasn't made any difference at all.

Thanks.

Regardless of which way round the fan is fitted, it will still blow through the rad, just not very efficiently if the wrong way round! Definitely worth checking.

I know it sounds odd, but how do you know it is overheating? leaking coolant out of the overflow? splitting pipes?

That doesn't mean it's overheating. It could be....but it doesn't mean it is. It's rather like the cheque is in the post...an what was the other one?

If there aren't any outward signs of it, and if it is happening very last like this, it could be the sender, the voltage reg or the gauge itself - it could be head gasket etc....but make sure it is actually boiling before condemning it.

how olds your oil to look from another view? if you have cheap crap oil in surly thats causing more friction specially at speed which would warm things up a little?

Oil can cause all sorts of issues with oil pressure etc - but it won't cause overheating due to excess friction - the bearings would be in the sump before the gauge went up much.

Beg to differ on this one, My wifes Astra from several years ago was getting hot and when i checked everything, it turned out to be the fact that there was just enough oil in it to keep the warning light off. I know its not the same as Old oil but does somewhat prove that oil , or lack of can cause an engine to runn hotter than it should.

Ok, so suggesting coasting down a hill was stupid. Don't do it. Its dangerous.

Anyway, it won't solve the route cause of any overheating so I don't know why I said it.
