Thanks guys, the freezer stuff is the one thing I haven't yet tried, I only got it hot with calor gas and cooled it with water but I'll give that a go as a last resort.

Just had another idea. It is rather brutal, but if you have access to a Kango hammer, or very small pneumatic drill, or maybe even an SDS hammer drill with rotation stop, grind one of the tools to a blunt end and put that against the back side. Rotate half a turn and repeat as needed. A lot of rapid, hard impacts may shift it. Keep the puller on of course, and keep it tight.

I'll see at work if I they have an impact hammer type thing, but where do you mean by 'the back side' ?

The side that is exposed through the starter aperture. What I was thinking of as the "front" is the side you have the puller on. But I do apologise for using non-standard terminology and not making it clear.

Hi All,

It's off!! it's not pretty but it's off!

DSC_0008a.jpg

Now that I have put it all together with the new parts, I have found a small packet of grease in the bottom of the clutch box.

This grease looks like it's for putting on the splines before sliding the clutch plate over them...

how important is this, and is it worth taking the clutch off again (the big flywheel bolt is on and tightened up) to put this grease on?

thanks again! it could be back on the road within a week :D

You should use a small amount of grease on the splines, because if they stick you will get clutch drag.

Does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy "the ultimate flywheel puller" is?

I bought a cheap laser one last time and snapped the big bolt running through the middle.

Pay cheap, pay twice.
Pay reasonable/expensive, hopefully pay once.

Try Sykes Pickavant, or Guessworks.com (regular on this forum)

(Other pullers are available)

Reviving this topic.

I'm trying to pull my flywheel off and have tried the methods mentioned in this post. Heating, freeze spray, breaker bar with extension, hammer. The flywheel is not giving at all, and the puller bolts are starting to bend. Any other ideas? Cut? Try another puller?

if the bolts are starting to bend then you have not levelled the pulling plate.

if the two surfaces are not level then you are not pulling in the correct direction so you will need way more force.

lock the flywheel in place with the slot horizontal.

make sure the main drive bolt has been lubricated. run it through the pulling plate a few times. fit the three pulling bolts. check it is as close to level with each other and then wind the bolt in as hard as you can.  have your tea. tighten more. go to pub. wind more pressure onto the bolt. go to bed. get up tighten more. have breakfast tighten. go to work pop back at lunch tighten. tea tighten pub tighten etc. it will go with a band when you dont expect it.

or buy a getofyarbastard from Guessworks. (or rent it).

We are rebuilding a 998, the clutch I removed ended up 20 feet across the garage from the engine as there was a small amount of fretting on the crank. Hopefully it will clean up ?

We had a 6 foot long breaker bar with an additional 6 foot scaffold pole on the end, it almost snapped the joint on the breaker it was so tight.

I have tried as you suggested for the last few days. The plate was level, I can see as I try to tighten the middle bolt more that the three bolts are twisting when I apply more force.

Would rent the puller from Guessworks but I'm located in Canada and the cost of postage and sending it back is probably more than the cost of the rental itself!

Ah you are bending the bolts through tightening. The you have not lubricated the drive bolt and the point it contacts the insert.

Gave it another go with the insert lubed up. Managed to get it a bit tighter than before but it's still stuck. I'll leave it for a day and come back at it later in the week.

When heating/freezing the area, I've been doing it with the puller attached. Good idea or not?
