I can get my daughters big Britax duo carseat in my SPI with no bother and the pushchair in the boot with the wheels off... Loads-a-room!

I did the Autotest on the Riviera Run in the late 90s with 10 in the car once. 6 of them were kids, so yes, they fit fine

I drove my mini to school and occasionally took the lads down to the town centre, all of whom are 6ft + and they weren't particularly cramped! They all had enough head room so size isnt an issue! Things like push chairs etc might be a struggle though..

Sorry to bump this back to life. If i fitted 3 lap belts in the rear of my 1979 mini 1000, is it legal to carry my 3 children in the back? Thanks, neil

No Minis (except possibly late registered MPis) have a registered number of seats because when they were sold there was nowhere in the paperwork to record it, although your car is probably insured as a 4 seater. If however you have fitted a lap belt to the middle 2 belt fittings it is not remotely safe to use. I know others on here have done it, but a seatbelt that is dangerous is pointless (and illegal incidentally). The fittings are so close together that anyone using it will be crushed by it in an impact as it pulls tight around them. Lap belts are dangerous enough as it is, especially for kids. I urge you to consider fitting 2 proper three point belts back there and leaving it as a 4 seater.

I don't have rear seat belts in mine (not a legal requirement before 1987). If ever I take my little nephew out I but him on his booster seat in the front. Safe enough there.

If you already have an existing car seat, try it in the car before you buy. I found that some of the modern seats are too bulky for the back seat of a mini, and others require the seat belt to stay taught in order to stop the car seat from wobbling around. Luckily the mpi has modern seat belts but better to test them now rather than later

I take my 4 year old grandson out in the mini all the time, he loves it. In fact he told me that his having the car when he can drive, I'll probably let him have it too.
