Iam going to fit 4 point harnesses to my car, I am going to use the existing seat belt mounts for the side lap belts, but as my car doesn't have rear seat belts, I need to decide where they will go. Looking at cars there seems to be two options, parcel shelf, or low down on the rear bulkhead, which is best? Also for the eyelets do you weld or bolt a strengthening area before you fit the eyelet?

Parcel shelf is not a great place as in an impact you will deform the back of the car and end up headbutting the steering wheel.

 

Make sure you strengthen the area you bolt through with 3mm spreader plates welded in.

 

Best solution (as mentioned by moggyton) is a harness bar.....have a look in the traders section.

One question.....you fitting a roll cage too???

Yes will be fitting a cage, un decided on full or just rear yet,
I'm planning to do some daylight road rallies..

As far as i know you cant have a cage and a harness bar, unless you somehow modify the cage yourself

Not true dude.....safety devices do a harness bar for their cage and i've made one for mine.

No worries.....no one is ever 100% right eh?....everyday is a school day.

 

Harness bar's at that height are by way the safest and best way to mount shoulder harnesses as the forces go straight back rather than down at an angle. Far safer in an accident and way more comfortable.  The MSA do allow (in their rules) belts to go downward at a certain angle range, but they do say straight back is the preferred angle.

Never had any problem as i made it from the correct thickness CDS tube with 3mm plate on the sides....why would you think there may be an issue?

 

When I make things that are safety related I always over engineer them as it is my life on the line if things go belly up!  I would never put my life or anyone elses at risk.

As long as the bar is made from the correct grade of steel and not silly thin tube I fail to see why there would ever be a problem.  Better that you are strapped to thick tube than thin sheet steel like the parcel shelf.
