I wouldn't want one of those harness bars, especially bolted to the rear arches. The forces in a crash can be massive.

Do it properly and tie the harness bar in with the roll cage.

I had a harness bar bolted to the arches in my old mini, I had a car crash into the rear quarter of it at around 30 mph, and it actually took the impact quite well, the bar didn't bend, the arches bent around it.

I think it's because you can't lean down if the roof does cave in?

Perhaps, but a roof caving in doesn't happen in slow motion giving you enough time to duck!

id be worried that there was any deformation from the harnes bar or surrounding areas in a 30 mph crash, although i suppose it could have been because you got shunted in the rear rather than the force exerted on it by the harnesses

Safety Devices harness bar.  Get one of them.  They're dear, but it's your life you're talking about.  Get a rear cage, with diagonal and a SD harness bar.

Hi

yes all the eyelets I have used have a course thread

and the bolt for seatbelts is much finer

so you will have to use plates

If you've got a roll cage you can often replace one roll cage bolt with an eyelet bolt for the outside one, and the foot of the cage makes a nice spreader as well.

This is a picture of the only properly safe proposal quoted on this entire thread. Harness bar on the cage with the belts out horizontally. By the (Blue) Book! Good man. Clearly values his personal safety. 4-points done badly are less safe than OE seatbelts.
