I knew mine was installed properly, so it was a case of stepping back and replacing parts until the problem was resolved. Start with the cheaper items, but you have to be sure what you have done so far is right ie its all installed properly etc.
This is very frustrating i know, but its night and day once sorted compared to a dizzy...

I believe that there is 5 degrees adjustment either way on mj. I got my whole bottom pulley wheel machined by a guy on tm, its spot on to the very degree.
Check, check and check again the timing to be sure whats going on with it as it stands....

The timing is 5 degrees. Mega jolt isn't talking to the laptop hence this topic! The only way I know of to figure out if the mj is working is with a strobe to see if the timing advances with a blip of throttle. Would a 2 degree advance with a blip indicate that mj is working??

Get another USB to serial cable with it's own driver this could easily be your problem as they are not all created equally.
Have you got access to someone with another MJ setup? If so, try your cable and notebook. Alternatively get hold of an old computer, even a desktop, with a serial port, at least you would be able to eliminate the USB to serial setup.

Every cable I bought came with a disc with driver on.
I unplugged MJ today and started it up. The timing advanced the same amount with a blip of the throttle as with MJ attached.
Rev counter stopped working, so obviously MJ is doing something when connected. When I plugged MJ back in, it retarded the ignition by about 5 degrees - I can only assume this is as a result of the timing being out.
So, what is this likely to mean? I'm getting closer to ripping the box out by the second!

I had this with a friends setup and it was the lead from the mj and to the convertor it had a wire pulled out. They are simple to check with a continuity checker and a multi meter.

I tried plugging the serial cable into my mums laptop this evening, but I'm not quite sure how that works. What should I do about comm port?

You need to make sure the same com port is entered into the mj software.
If you're running xp, you then need to make sure that you insert the dongle into the same USB port on your machine. I just got the cheapest usb convertor from maplin and it worked. I know some people have issued with different makes of dongles.
It could be the rs232 cable that came with the mj, I think there are only a few wires connected. There is a diagram on the autosport labs web site so you could check it or make a new one.
Once your over this hurdle you will never run a dizzy again.
