Hello there everyone i'm experiencing some problems with my mini and wondered if any of you know or have dealt with it and knpw how to sort it!

My Mini is a 1991 Mini City 1000

It first started when i went to pick up a friend from his house, i was sitting outside with the engine off and moved the gear stick side to side to check i was in neutral, when doing this i felt some resistence right in the centre before it slides over to where third and fourth would be, it almost clicks over in a way and recently its been getting worse and worse, so when im driving a long i go for third sometimes its just hars sliding it over and sometimes its like third and fourth and that slide over isnt there at all! It also gets stuck when reversing to the point where it feels as though there is no other gear but reverse after a lot of man power and fiddling you can eventually get it back to nuetral but i fear this problem is getting worse and would love some help from my fellow mini owners!

Thank you

Jake Webster

This can be something as simple as the selector oil seal right at the back of the box becoming wedged, or something as complicated as one of the selector forks inside the gearbox going out of place.

Have you noticed any oil leaking from the back of the engine recently?

Hey there, thank you for the fast reply!

There is always a bit of oil that leaks out in small drips around the sump area which might have something to do with it, do you think it could be linked to that?

Cheers

Would it be worth checking the gear change extension 'remote control housing' just under the gearstick first. Could it be just bone dry of grease?

Usual cause is the reverse idler bush walking out of the gear thus not allowing it to return fully home and holding the bell crank levers tight. Gearbox out job and rebuild to fix.
