It was 2003, and he only paid 300 quid for it so you cant really blame him too harshly. However yes a few of the jobs on the mk1 were questionable, bizzarely the bootlid handle being put on 'sideways' annoyed me the most haha

Ed's a good enough guy and doesn't claim to be a guru of any cars.
When we were younger he used to be a vdub man, Mainly beetles.
Working on all kinds of cars and sometimes doing things for the first time he isn't going to get it as good as you guys who live and breath a certain car type (like me as well).
He's just a funny guy who has a go and built some rather fun and odd cars like the sofa for instance.
Mikes not a bad guy and is just a typical car salesman with the patter etc and all the old skool contacts. He's a good presenter but often the producers like to stick to a plan regardless of what Ed and Mike say or think.
Just because a few bodges or Disasters are shown on the vids doesn't mean they were happy with the outcome either.
I for one would love the opportunity to have a go at what they do. And I would probably make a real mess of it aswell lol
Don't think that either Ed or Mike are like what you see in the all the vids and programmes. Its just a snapshot of a pre programmed and orchestrated and often fictional programme.
Meet them first, you'd be pleasantly surprised.

I loved it when they did the WW2 Jeep. Then they took it to a WW2 themed show and as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight were doing their display Brewer said how wonderful it was to see a Spitfire flying. Pity it was a Hurricane .

I think the earlier series were a little dodgy, but the last few have been good now they are given a decent budget.

Don't forget it's an entertainment show. Do most of you guys also believe that Ed doesn't drive the vehicles, or go to view any with Mike? It's made for TV, and it's a bloody good show. I love every episode and think that Mike and Ed are a great team, had the pleasure of meeting Ed at L2b and him, and his wife were both lovely.
The profits are probably all pie in the sky, including the prices they pay for cars and the profit they make. When they sell the cars it's evident that the people buying know what they're getting and are more than likely actors.
The show is all about being a 'wheeler dealer' and that's exactly what they do. Make a quick buck out of cars. They never claimed to have restored the Mk1, if they wanted to do that they Ed could restore a Mini to standard just as good and probably better than a lot of the cars in the Mini scene. The Minis were filled but they were done well enough, and it was a good 10 years ago now, whilst Minis were still worth a lot, a Mk1 wasn't worth as much as it is now. Quick fixes to sell a car on is what it's all about and it makes for good TV. You can see from some of their work that if they want to go all out on a car (Fiat 500 and isetta come to mind) then they can. They took a cheap one owner Mk1 which already has some suspect areas, fixed those, not in a perfect way, but as Ed states, the budget wouldn't allow that, and sold it on for profit.
They restored the Moke to a great standard, and kept all of the original features.
Ed is a total wizard, he has so much potential and often shows us that in the show. Don't forget the show started as a tin pot program using basic equipment and restoring cheap every mans hot hatches such as the Mk2 golf. It's success as a TV program has brought it to where it is now and I think it deserves all the credit.
