So did I ? which is suspect the problem lies in the column stalk assy, if it was the main headlight switch dip would be down as well

Gavin, what year is your mini?

 

Some have a dim/dip relay (big pink one under the dash) that does strange things with the dip beam circuit.

 

Actually they're not that strange, it just prevents you from driving on sidelights only by turning on dip beam when you select side lights while the ignition is on.

Isn't your problem with the main beam? The dim-dip relay isn't connected to the main beam. You can remove the relay and bridge the connection to the dipped beam lamps in the relay socket but I don't think it will help if the problem is just with the main beam.

mines a bit off topic but i have leds in my light housing as the side lights but when i put these on and when the engine is on the main beam comes on but its only weak not dipped beam. the light unit isn't a bodge job they are manufactured with the sidelight as half ring leds. Any ideas on how to stop it?
