I remember quite a few of those cars. I was parked next to "Low Fat Spread" at Longbridge in 1999 as part of the Mini 40 celebrations.
Phil.
glad to see someone remembers some of them!

What strikes me in those pictures is how much younger all the Minis look!
I know Mini owners all try their best to keep their cars in top condition, but the average Mini seen on the road today certainly doesn't look as young and sprightly as those in the pictures!

i know the pics of the show cars i have put up look really nice, but there were loads of really rough minis at shows back then, i know everyone says it but you could buy one with tax and mot for £50, as they wernt worth anything they wernt worth spending tons of money on them to keep them looking nice.

they were totally throw away, and i dont think they were exactly cool either
Suppose it depends what year your talking about.
I was in sixth form just after the last one come out of Longbridge, and at that time a Mini was the car every 17 year old lad wanted (at least in my school).

your not much different in age to me then, but where i went to college, and then uni afterwards it wasnt cool, and as a young boyracer at the time, it definately wasnt cool, it was all about escort rs turbos, saxos, corsas, infact anything but a mini. as soon as i got my first rs turbo, i couldnt keep the young ladies away lol

Haha maybe your right. I was a boring kid in with a boring crowd! So at that time a Mini was a "sensible" first car so maybe that's where I'm thinking of it being popular.
I remember the "cool kids" chaved up Saxos and big exhaust Escorts. There were also plenty of Nova's covered in neon lights from what I remember.

i think becuase the laws were a little more lax back then it meant people were a little more free to do what they wanted. there used to be loads of shonky looking convertable minis around!

certainly in my area people had minis because they couldnt afford the other cars we have mentioned. that was certainly why me and my brother had them.
i know its not that long ago, but "retro" was a word people used for clothes, but not cars. minis like my clubman estate wernt retro, they were just old!

just found this one, bill/pete edwards silhouette clubman, this was the fastest mini in the world for a while.
my old clubman estate with my brother at the wheel, i took this the first time it came out the garage after its rebuild. this was £80!
and some time later with grp2 arches. i loved that car, and literally cried like a baby the day i sold it!

Same here, a mini wasn't cool at my school. I remember taking a girl out and a lad that fancied her said "why would you like someone that drives around in a mini?" He had some chavved up Fiesta. Twonk.
Think I was l lucky in that all the idiots left my school by sixth form!
