Hi all,

I checked my primary gear end float today, it is way too tight.

I could only just fit a 0.05mm feeler gauge in the gap... The Haynes says it should be between 0.10mm and 0.18mm....?

My thrust washer is EXACTLY 3mm thick.... So to get the clearance to be 0.10mm, I would need a 0.25mm thrust washer...

But the thinnest one I can find is 0.112" (2.844mm)....

Any suggestions on how I can achieve the correct primary gear end float clearance would be great!

Thanks,

Iain

You could take some metal off the end of the bush (C Washer end) But you would have to make sure it was filed/sanded perfectly flat.

Yeah I've read about doing this, and my concern is the same as yours.... Might see if my mate can take off an exact amount off with his milling machine...

Have you tried fitting a more worn C-clip?

I don't have any other C-clips. Will putting on a worn c clip be an applicable alternative to getting a thinner thrust washer to gain more clearance??

That is about 0.002" end float in English and the original BMC Workshop Manual states that the end float should be 0.003" to 0.006".

You are, therefore, only 0.001 (one thou) too tight.

I would simply use fine emory cloth on a flat pad and rub C-washer on it to remove 0.001", rather than fiddle about with the C-washer thickness.

That's what I did. Emery cloth on a flat piece of steel. Rub back of c-washer down. Check end float and repeat until it's bang on

What it tells is is that it really doesn't matter very much at all -it's "near enough is good enough" engineering - and that you can afford to give the gear a bit of float - just avoid it being too tight.
