Difficult to say without seeing it.

There is a dip in the bulkhead on all Minis under the carburettor. If yours is different to standard, then i doubt it was like that from new. People do modify this area to accept different carburettors and turbos, but i don't think Rover ever did that. The 5 speed gearbox was available as an optional extra, but not sure if it was available from Rover as far back as 1992. They moved the bonnet catch in 1996 to fit a front mounted radiator, again not something that was done in 1992...

Do you know the History of the car...? How can you be sure these things were all on it from new...?

You either have a car that has been modifed or something extremely rare...

Any chance of some piccies...?

A 5 speed box on a 998 ?????? Are you 100% sure it's a 998? Just because it says it on the logbook doesn't mean a thing !!! And, as has been said before, have you history to go with it?

i reckon it is a 1275 that has had the 5 speed gearbox added at the factory (like Bungles??)

The dip under the carb is standard bulhead shape.

The inner fan hole came as standrad from around that age aswell i think.

Although if there isnt a fan then it could be a re-shelled car and all the things i have said are rubbish.

But like GW PICTURES please.

I'm pretty sure the 5 speed box was only available as an option on the later Rover cars.

But on a 998?

Has the block got tappet covers?

Well no, but then I don't think there were any late Rover cars that were 998s were there?

What I was getting at is that if it has got a 5 speed box, that was put on as an option from factory, then if my statement is correct then it can't be a '92 998 Mayfair.

Early 90's was the changeover for all Mayfairs to be 1275 wasn't it?

Yeah in 1992 they dropped the 998cc engine and all Mini's got the 1275cc block, but the Cooper's had the greatest torque. Then around 1993/94 the carb was dropped and all Mini's got single point fuel injection.

As for the internal bonnet release, well that came in around 1992/93 too. :P

I really don't know, but I don't think Rover ever had a 5 speed box as an option.

I think they were fitted by John cooper garages, but it was ratified by Rover.

5 speed box was NEVER a Rover option. It was a Cooper Garages option
