Just resurrecting this thread to see if there is anymore feedback on the Swiftune SW8.

I'm considering some hillclimbing & sprinting & looking at the cam & final drive options.

The SW5 seems to be the popular choice for road at the moment, but was looking at the SW8 data for a few more horses at the right time.

My perception is hillclimbing could cause the engine to drop off a hotter cam with some of the tight corners or gradients.

Any wisdom in this choice?

To be competitive you will probably need a longer duration cam.

What size motor?

Big cam low final drive, and high cr big carb. Its a full on race engine for competetive hill climbing. Unless of course you are in a limited mods road car class for example.

Engine size will be 1380, looking at the cam profiles I might have already answered my question though.

The torque comes in later on the SW8 so could bog down on tight hill corners & I may not have time or opportunity to be hanging around 7000rpm on most hillclimbs long to get the best HP from it.

I'm looking at starting with the beginners class, so yes limited mods. From what I understand I can do what I like with the internals of the engine. But engine appearance externally & positionally it must be as original. So no 16v heads. But can have high CR, large capacity & big carb.

The gearbox I have has a 3.44, my only concern with changing to say a 3.6 is running out of revs on longer straights or any of the odd circuit sprints.

I'm going for the straight cut, close ratio clubman gears as well. Just to add to the mix.

But I'm open to advice here.

Thanks for the responses so far folks!

In most hill climbs 3.93 or 4.1 fd's are needed with revs easily getting to 7 to 7.5krpm. If you are learning by all means go with a milder cam, you will b rebuilding the engine again as you need more speed.

If you are learning, match the cam to the diff. So only fit the really low diff when the hottest cam is fitted.
