Well do them again slightly looser and see what happens?

Will do. I was wondering if anyone had any first hand knowledge of whether it could be the cause. I just seem to have gone a very long winded way of asking :-)

Was hoping someone would say "oh yes its a classic sign" or "no never in a million years" :D

I've no personal first hand knowledge but if they were too tight they would not close and it would struggle to start

It would make sense. I suppose the valves would be open too early and stay open too long?

Hi

yes if the valves are set to tight as the engine gets hot

the clearance will get to tight and it can hold the valve of its seat

that's why its there

are you using the rule of nine ?

I set ours 12 inlet and 15 exhaust

also to me it sounds like you have a burnt valve

the PSI is not going up enough with oil down the the plug hole

hope that helps

I'd be happier if it were starting easier as that seems to be the more recent problem.

Have you tried adjusting the mixture? Try starting when how with a bit of choke, you may find the idle mixture has been inadvertently leaned out.

Air leaking at the inlet manifold? you said you changed it, it could be your problem. I appreciate what you have said about it running reasonably well before pulling the head off even with the compression issue.

You say you only have the starting issue when the engine is hot, surely the engine would not start easily whether hot or cold with the valve clearances that far out,

hi grumpy dad 69k and Stu. Been in an internet free zone for ten days :-D

fiddling with choke makes no difference and it starts on the button cold and runs without choke when hot so hopefully mixture is there or thereabouts.

I'm leaning toward what grumpy dad and the others have said about clearances. Maybe I've let the screw turn a bit when tightening the nut and closed them up a bit.

When i think about it if you're dealing in thou then any tiny discrepancy in gap could mean a lot in end result.
