if hes spent 12k on the engine , then surely a engine costing 5k wont keep up with it ?

Brake horse figure is not what to look at... Look at power to weight ratio....
Take all in required bits off and don't go the burger van at lunch time.. Salads for you, let the rabbits will go hungry..
That and the fact beetles are heavy shells..
Poly carb windows
Fibreglass doors.
Drilled engine bits(bell housing, etc)
Carbon roof.
Give it a think see if it's going to happen... On the other side...her bike needs to actually get to the golden 200 brake...
My z.car did 0-60 in 4.5 secs quarter mile in 12secs.... And that's a bike engine...
Dont get me wrong I agree about the power to weight, but a few poly windows are not going to get near a fast drag beetle, the meet I went to 12 second runs were classed as test runs! Lol Even if the OP could get to 600kg all in he would need 500BHP to be in the same league even taking the power to weight ratio into account, if he has spent 12K already this is going to be a tough challenge.
Scroll down near the bottom, these are the sort of bugs we watched 800BHP+ crazy

There are few true 200bhp turbo minis, and I mean a few.
TurboMini's forum is your friend here.
Matt Woods "Williams Mini" was the first that I know of to claim 200bhp and to have some dyno pulls to prove it.
Price wise, well it's not just the engine you have to worry about at these levels. Specially selected gearbox casings, stress-relieved gears and shafts, uprated driveshafts etc.
Phil.
There are quite a few of us running true 200hp A series (and 200lb/ft too)
The myths are more plentiful though. Mine ran standard driveshafts, any old gearbox casing, off the shelf minispares clubman gearset, standard crank/rods/pistons/block. I wanted to see how far I could push it to dispell a lot of the myths. Turbo engines got a bad rep for reliability years ago from all the *******wits who ripped them from scrap metro's and gave them death.
To the OP, to keep up with a 12 second beetle you're going to need something like the green Force Racing mini and much deeper pockets unfortunately.

Better question to the OP would be, have you actually ever ran a 1/4 yourself? Ever posted a time or been in your mates in the passenger seat up the strip?
You could have a 200hp mini sitting right there with all the weight loss and bells and whistles but can you actually drive it quick up the strip?

If he was still running 15's would you still pursue this? Point is what makes him think he will do 12's after a rebuild? because everyone else has? Everyone would like to do a something time, doesn't mean they actually will
Unless your telling us he has run 12's before and has proof but his engine is tiring hence the rebuild but I somehow doubt it

Carl has run an 11.9 iirc, but then your will need 17k to buy the don. Seems cheap if an engine is 10?

very true, going from 15 seconds to 12 seconds is like the difference between formula ford and F1! Is the engine cooked and was doing 12s or is it doing 15s but he thinks it will do 12s? There is a shed load of BS in the vw scene and unless you talk to the likes of Laurie Petit, getting the truth is very hard (and I don't think Laurie is doing 'specials' anymore anyway). If he was still running 15's would you still pursue this? Point is what makes him think he will do 12's after a rebuild? because everyone else has? Everyone would like to do a something time, doesn't mean they actually will
