Hi all

So im pretty knew to all this. Bought my 1987 Austin Mini City e on Thursday and can honestly say I'm in love. What a brilliant little car. I bought it knowing there would be problems and for the best part I want to fix what I can myself, that said within the first ten minutes of me handing the money over I was fixing a problem with the fuel lines. All sorted now nice little ten minute job.

Two days later and I'm on to my next problem.

Today I bought myself a new stereo system for the car to replace the ford model that was currently in it. Now as far as I can tell I have wired it up correctly.

Tested for constant live (Red in the mini) and wired this to the yellow wire of the new stereo.
Tested for switched live (Black in the mini) and wired this to the Red wire on the stereo.
Then I connected the only wire left on the power side, Yellow/Blue ( which I assumed was the earth) to the black on the stereo. I havent yet tested continuity for earth as I havent got the required tester available to me today so I'm fully aware this may be the problem.

Anyway to finally get to the point. The stereo lights up and works fine up to a certain volume then it goes off and comes back on a few seconds later and continues to do so until the volume is turned down. Also when I turn my lights on to main beam the stereo cuts out completely. Turn the lights off and it comes back on.

Any help would be appreciated and I'm sure I'll be asking many more questions in the next few months.

Thanks

the new stereo is drawing too much power

this could be because the wiring is under sized or a bad connection limiting the power or you have wired the thing is series with something else

The Black wire in the mini comes live when the ignition is turned on so this has got to be the switch live.
The red wire has nothing to do with the earth as far as I can tell. Constant on the mini, switch on the stereo.

As far as the wiring is concerned im pretty sure its all right. The Only thing I havent tested is the earth but it cant be be the black wire as an earth should not be coming live under normal circumstances.

Thanks for your comments though all help is appreciated.

The new stereo is a Sony DSX-A4OUI. And I Followed the wiring diagram to check the configuration. Speakers are Goodmans GLS 140. Old speakers but they seem to be working ok

I think the first thing ill do today is run a new constant live from the fuse box surely this will then get rid of the problem if it is wired in series
