Hello

Got a 1987 Rover and the fuel gauge is not working what so ever. Need to get it through an MOT but want to try and fix it myself first.

Do you have a Volt or Multi-meter ?

If not, perhaps an old Brake / Stop bulb with one working filament with a length or flex?

The hand-books used to have a wiring diagram in the back, with a code to the wire colours.

The current goes from the battery, via the starter solenoid, on to the ignition switch;  if all the other usual things work when the ignition is switched on, then the wiring is OK as far as the ignition switch.   From there it goes via a fuse to / through the Fuel Gauge and on to the back of the car, to / through the sender / float in the tank, to earth.

If it is only the Fuel Gauge that isn't working, it isn't likely to be the fuse, but worth removing the fuse and checking.

With age, dust and corrosion can block the current, so moving the fuse or any connectors, just might cure the problem.

Go to the boot and gently pull the wire off the sender / float and test for current between the wire and earth.  If there is current to the tank, it is either bad earth or the sender / float is faulty.

If there is no current to the boot, you'll have to start searching behind the Dash.

Take The live wire off the sender at tank and put it to earth. If the gauge goes to above full then it is the sender that is bad.

Hope this helps
