I think the estate is a great looking car. The saloon isn't that bad either. OK it's a bit Hyacinth Bucket, but hey that blue was a nice colour.
Funny thing is, the other day my Dad (who isn't into cars) said... 'nice old car your mini is isn't it, considering they were never a particularly good looking car'. And it's kind of true, it's cute but the average person wouldn't find a family saloon particularly good looking.

Because they're awful, hateful monstrosities that's why!!
Actually, mine was very reliable .. I think in the 6 years we had it we only had two new rear shocks and a water pump under warranty, and a new steering rack when I had to swerve in snow to avoid another skidding car (I slid into kerb with steering on full lock!). Apart from that it was basic maintenance (oil changes, filters, etc). And that was averaging 18K miles per year for first three years and much less for next three (used as company car then bought cheap off leasing company as second family car).
I did try a 2.0 Turbo before deciding on the EFi ... turbo scared the cr@p out of me ...
The rusty sills were actually a massive surprise when I noticed a small rust bubble and poked it!

Visited a Won't Go today at a local scrap yard. Shame really as it was built a couple of miles away from where it came to rest and had lived locally all its life. For this one, it's Dud by name and Dud by nature
Now moving swiftly on to something more cheery, well I guess more eighties really!

Not that I'm into modding, but what can be done with Maestros and Montegos. Just don't forget to add the paper bag to your parts list!

A couple more Harlequin Montegos. I have to say that I'm rather fond of the bitsa and duck tape look.
This one was at BL Day last year. It was bought for a bottle of scotch, has covered over 500,000 Kilometers and it had come especially from Holland to join us at BL Day. BL Day is when the Maestro & Montego Owners Club hand out their annual awards (I guess equivalent to Mini concours, but it only happens once a year, even the winning cars are rusty, and we just hope there is at least one for each category!) However, thanks to his Montego which very unjustly didn't win an award, a Workhorse Award has now been introduced. However, as it didn't get an award last year, I gave it a Cowley Centenary flag
With its proud owner
This Montego was from Ragley Hall last weekend. Now, as much as I love Harlequin Montegos, and I do, this one might just be pushing it. The owner then told me that he had another one at home that wasn't good enough to bring out, that just got used for skip runs!

A little Montego up date. On Monday morning, I received an email from Russ Swift, with this attached! It brighten my Monday morning no end
Then on Wednesday, Tommy's old owner's son (Tommy's my green, RSP S) offered to give me this, as he'd found it at the same time as finding Tommy's S stuff:
As it's worth about £100, (he thought it was worthless), I'm paying him the £100. It's very rare to find them in complete and in that condition, so even for £100, I'm very pleased!
I'm currently working on the Maestro & Montego Owner's Club stand that the NEC. I think they're feeling a little Tanya-ed, and I'm not sure that I've yet convinced them all to wear Tetris costumes Montego is 30 years old this year, as it Tetris, so it seemed like a great theme to me If you make your way on to the M&MOC's stand at the NEC, you'll find me wearing this
Still, if you think I'm mad - here's one of our committee members getting the carpet that we reassured from the Manchester Classic Car Show ready for the NEC! He is a good sport

In the RAF at North Luffenham in the early nineties we had a fleet of about 35 - 40 montego estates the diesel turbo one's that were replacing the vauxhal cavalier estates, the montegos were at the time very quick, and certainly comfortable and we were a very high mileage unit with no major issues.
