I had a Hillman imp Rallye years ago - it was low mileage when I got it but leaked like a sieve. I tried everything, changed loads of oil seals here and there - but is was finally cured by a simple clean out of the breather system.

As for these little cloth/paper filters that seem all the rage now - i'd guess they wouldn't last very long before gunging up.

Yep the little filters get saturated quickly and no longer allow air pass through them. That's when the crank case pressure builds up and causes leaks.
As long as they are kept clean they will be fine its just that 90% of people fit and forget.
