Brake Lights Bust

brakes electrical

Best Answer tiltjam , 25 June 2014 - 08:24 AM

Hey Thanks heaps for all the help. Turned out to be a bad terminal at the switch and some funky wiring at the tail light end. Nothing a bit of solder couldn't fix. I also took the time to give the fuse clips a clean up with some wet and dry.

Thanks again

Hi all,

Having some trouble with the brake lights in my 1980 mini 1000.

bottom line is they don't work...at the moment.

I had a poke around with the fuse box and concluded that the fuse was playing up. I metered it and it was giving intermittent continuity readings. This is consistent with the fact my signal lights wouldn't work from time to time but would spring back to life if the fuse was given a wiggle.

I replaced the fuse and that didn't fix the fault. Interestingly enough the fuse that was in place was a 20A fuse. all wiring diagrams I have pored over say the top position fuse (#1 & #2) should be a 35A fuse.

Before I start scouring over the loom to find the fault I'm wondering if there is anything suggestible that would save me some time and patience.

I should also note the car is a New Zealand built one.

Thanks

Have you checked the brake pedal switch?

I did. It metered fine and even when I bridged the wires I didn't have any luck.

not a loose connection near to the gear stick on the floor is it if that's where the wire goes?

Make sure the contacts in the fuse box are clean, may have to pull it apart to do this or it might be enough to just push the fuse in and out several times (10-15 times)

I have seen some 4 fuse type boxes where there is corrosion on the rear of the fusebox, if its intermittant connection on the fuse holder either clean it up or fit a new fuse box. check for a 12v feed on the green wire into the brake light switch, and work back from there to the fuse box.
