Hi,

Can anyone advise me please, I've just converted a NOS wiring loom from mid nineties Mayfair to fit the rebuild of my 1970 mini.

The loom has the pink/white ballast resistor wire fitted

My engine is pre A-plus and as such the solenoid is attached to the inner wing.
There's a yellow and white wire which I understand momentary provides 12v to the coil whilst cranking to aid starting.

I know the the yellow/white wire runs to the + on the coil however can someone please tell me if the opposite end should connect to the 'starter side' of the solenoid.

I've included a photo to try and clear the fog a bit

Cheers

Sorry forgot to add, the yellow/white wire was connected to the LT trigger centre terminal in error.

Are you intending to fit a ballast ignition to the earlier car? if not then the White/pink is not used as its a 9v wire, and nor will the White/yellow as thats just a 12v upon cranking from the solenoid, also for the ballasted system.

Both those wires can be taped back into the loom and a new white wire taken off the fusebox top left, where you currently have a white now, this white joins to the White/pink inside the loom. you can cut the loom back until the join to the White/pink and connect a new white down to your coil +,and retape, or this can be run outside the new loom to save cutting the loom tape, and now you use the standard coil for your earlier car which is a 12v one such as a DLB 105

N.B when I make reference to re-tape, I'm referring to loom tape not insulation tape which look poor unless done very tight but this restricts movement of the loom.

Thanks for the reply, I was intending keeping the ballast system on the car, I have a an idea of how the ballast system works. I was just wondering if there was a possibility of keeping the ballast as I don't fancy opening up the loom again.

I've had a bit of time to think about this now, I've realised that connecting the yellow/white wire to the starter side of the solenoid will just provide a positive feed to the starter and cause it to turn over constantly ......... which I'm sure would cause the yellow/white wire to melt in any case.

Can anyone help ???

No not correct the ballasted cars use a different solenoid with a terminal for the White/yellow just to provide 12v to the 9v coil during cranking, thats all that wire does.

Your car never was a ballasted ignition just std 12v coil with a 12v switched feed as I listed above, the ballasted ignition wire (Whire/pink) overheats and burns the loom out, get rid of those 2 wires (White/pink White/yellow) and run a neat 12v feed down as per my info above, or you could be buying or repairing your new loom sooner than you think

Cheers for the advice, looks like I'll be stripping back the loom then and ditching the ballast kn favour of the white positive feed.

Thanks

Just open it up at the top where the white is and trace down to where it joins the White/pink and join your new white there and use a new roll of loom  tape (not sticky tape) do it tight with the new white inside and no one will be any the wiser, just saves cutting the whole loom open. Just take your time with the loom tape and overlap it and your sorted. AES keep the loom tape if your stuck http://www.autoelect...ng=tape&x=0&y=0
