I've just put 35 watt H4-fit halogen bulbs in my Autopals. Hugely brighter, whiter lights than the sealed beams without overloading the wiring. Had to cut 1mm off the tang to seat it properly but it was a simple enough job with some very sharp tin snips. Can't wait to get the relays in and step up to 55 watts now!

Your standard wiring if in good condition can take the upgarde to 55w bulbs now, your sealed beams were 45wx2 and drew 7.5amps, 2x 55w bulbs will draw 9.16amps, by all means fit relays to take the load off the standard switches (4 off), but there are hundreds of cars which had sealed beams running around converted to 55w Halogens without issues.

ah, I thought the relay set-up was a must Dave.  My wiring and connectors are all good and clean, I'll slip the 55's in and try them and keep monitoring the switch then.  Bring on the night! :P
