A question for those who understand load, angles and technical stuff like that.

My house has a steep drive, which normally isn't an issue.  It does become an issue when your car breaks and you need to get it into the garage....which is at the top of the drive.

My mini has twice needed to be hoisted up the drive and I ended up towing it with my spare car and then man handling the car into the garage - not that easy or safe in all honesty.

So...what sort of rating of winch would i need to pull a 1 ton car (I know a mini weighs less but my other car doesn't) up a 30 ish degree drive....I can measure the angle more accurately if needs be.

I understand that the winch isn't dead lifting 1 ton, but what sort of load is it taking?

Any suggestions?  It could be hand operated or electric, and would prefer something reasonably good value as it won't be used every day.....famous last words.

Cheers

Ain't caravans and boats a bit lighter than a ton?  And is that up a slope?

What about a car winch? The sort you see on landrovers. They are relatively cheap (well some are) and designed for pulling cars out of ditches etc. they would easily cope with a mini and could be run from a transformer.

A similar winch to that used on a recovery truck? Some have fairly steep angles on the ramps... I think most are something like 2 tonne.

The one on my 4x4 cost me £170 second hand and is rated to pull up to 9tons or something silly like that.

What sort of budget are you working with?

I had this discussion at my last mini meet, they came to the conclusion that a two tone whinch would be best, they also talked about using a high lift jack,

Would have liked to have spent less than £170 in all honesty if we are talking budget.  If i was using it day in day out then I don't mind spending as much as it takes, but for something that may never get used (because minis never break down!!!) i'd prefer something sub £100.

How about a boat winch?  The sort with a strap for pulling a boat onto a trailer.  e.g.http://www.amazon.co...s=trailer winch  You don't say how long your drive is though!

At a 250KG rating i wouldn't want to take the risk!!!!

I would say from road to back of garage (where the winch would be mounted) is about 20m.  But i could use a tow rope to add to the length and get the car half way up then chock it and get it back on the winch,

I think I'd put in a heavy duty metal loop, try an boat chandler or similar and a length of rope. Tie to mini, through loop down to something else and drive away slowly with one person in each car. It'll whistle up. Thunder bolts should hold it to the wall.

Where abouts in the country are you? I have a hand winch (like a tirfor) clogging up my garage. Would be perfect for you.
