A few days ago I got back from around a 30 mile journey on a roads to find that when idling in my drive the car had developed an engine rattle. Some searching around made me think that it was something to with the clutch release bearing, so I changed this however the problem still persists it used to stop when the clutch was pressed but now it is continuos up until around 1500 rpm where the noise can no longer be head.

I fitted a new clutch less than 100 miles ago
The timing chain is new and is the duplex version
New clutch release bearing and shaft
Tappets have been checked 3 times and are all spot on

I have no idea what is causing this but my car now sounds like a transit when idling and it is slowily bothering me more and more

Any ideas would be helpful

My first thought was the transfer gears as well. It definitely sounds like a transit. But that's not a rattle. More of a knock. (unless the noise you're talking about wasn't picked up in the video)
It looks as though there is a lot of smoke or steam coming from the exhaust. I'd be inclined to say something like headgasket problems as this can cause horrible knocking noises. Hard to tell from the video.

Steam is down to the weather here today it's been very cold and video was taken early after it had been sitting overnight, on a normal day there is no smoke/ steam also no lack of power, also had a head-gasket change around 2 months ago

Video isn't great but the noise is shown, ignore the steam as the engine isn't smoky on a warm day or once it has been driven

I have fitted a duplex, I had problems with noise before and it turned out it was the timing chain cover fouling on the chain so I knocked out the bits fouling On the chain and it was fine, like I say it happened less than 100 miles on from putting the engine in the car and the timing chain catching was all sorted once the noise was heard.

It started after a 30 mile trip at around 60mph which is the engines first long run after the resto so could it be something to to with that ? I belive it could be the idler bearing but it makes the same sound in gear so I am unsure.

Keep the comments coming need to figure out what this is as I have a rolling road booked, however if it is critical then I will have to cancel this

Thanks harry

I thought it was the idler gear to when you said it stopped when you pt the clutch in.

Yeah I'm abit stumped and when in gear and moving at really low speed like 3mph I can still hear it, the only time it goes away is over 1500rpm it's like something is clattering until it has some load on it

Hi

when you fitted the duplex

did you counter sink the 2 bottom holes

and fit counter sunk screws

if not the chain is hitting the bolts

If it goes away when you press the clutch then its beyond the clutch plate, i.e when the car is in neutral with the engine running the transfer gears are turning press the clutch and your not driving the transfer gears so probably the idler gear rattling which is quite common, were the transfer gears shimmed to spec?

edit - Could be the timing plate bolts as above if the crank thrust washers are knackered and your pushing the whole crank towards the rad, then the bottom pulley would clear the bolt heads. I'd imagine it would make a noise relative to the crank speed.

Counter sunk the bolts and used a different type of screw fixing which was flush, I do not think it's the duplex as originally it made this noise but I sorted it out straight away

The problem is there weather the clutch is depressed or not, Stumped for ideas

Other than this the car runs perfectly so I'm pretty gutted with this noise

Transfer gears are factory spec I only did a clutch change and a new cam, nothing else was dismantled as the engine was in my car before and ran fine
