Unfortunately the best 'towers' are 4x4's and Estates...

I had a Legacy Estate and that was a superb towing vehicle, and the latest Diesel Subaru's are just in that price range... You could opt for a saloon version but IMO, the estate gives you better versatility...

Also you need to consider the weight of what you are towing and the towing capacity of the vehicle, most average family cars will not have the weight to tow a car transporter + vehicle say weighing say 1400kg's in all

Is he looking for a car for "soft roader" as I call them, like a 4x4 but not as good as a proper disco.

I would suggest 3 series, like a 320d or Audi A4

Other wild card options could be a Saab 93 or possibly a Volvo. Sounds daft but they are normally well built and aren't thrashed like some cars.

If looking for a little bigger then I would say Nissan X trail or maybe a Ford Kuga...

But as said above I would go for an estate for extra versatility

Yeh this is something i did mention to him regarding 4x4's. I mean even an estate be perfect as he will have alot room for tools, spare wheels etc

It looks like an rx8 weighs about 1300kgs, add the weight of a trailer 350(ish) kgs and you're at 1650.  My 320d estate can tow 1600 but my trailer is rated to 1400, it weighs 350 kg so I can carry 1050kgs

I use an early Ford Ranger King Cab Pick Up. Its excellent. 500 odd miles to a tank, tows very well. 5 large seats, so comfortable for a bunch of chaps with plenty of room. big bed to throw tyres, bags, engines, other general crap that is mucky. My dogs love it in the back (mine has a truckman canopy on it). With the canopy off you can fit some dirt bikes in the back and plenty of gear, or stick them on a trailer if that's your kinda thing.

Plus it drifts pretty well (when in the 2wd setting) and is great for a bit of the green lanes and some off roading. It has switchable drive (4 settings) and also has a diff lock). I take mine on the pay and play days, there are a fair few sites locally and have had a go at a couple of the marker days. Its all good fun and it tows pretty well.

Only problem is, even the early 2000 models seem to be going for £2500 with 200k+ on them. ratios are pretty cack for long motorway runs but they can certainly do modern motorway speeds.

Audi A6 works for me, and pretty bullet proof.

200,000 miles and still towing strong!

Only problem with it is I look like a country boy pig farmer most of the time driving a pick up covered in crap!

Which makes it all the more amusing when it goes sideways!
