Yeh there has been plenty of good suggestions and also good tips aswell regarding towing. So much appreciated guys thank you. Yes tax on some these did make me think. Ill pass alot this on anyway and hopefully it will help him out abit

Maybe a skods yeti? Check the weights but I think you'd be alright we used to tow 2 horses + trailer so around 2000kgs (but in France so slightly different laws) Nice cars for everyday driving as well as towing. Good mpg as well, and come in diesel version.

It's a very good point on the licence regulations. I was certain I would be fine towing the Midas when I picked it up. Trailer was about 130kg (I think because it was borrowed!), the Midas weighed about 700kg with all the spares so shouldn't have been too much of a problem. The tow car was a Nissan Navara though, and that weighs 3200kg according to its V5 when I thought it'd be no more than about 2300kg. Ouch! So I would've been over 800kg overweight if I'd been stopped. Luckily my friend who has full entitlement was able to drive it. Be careful guys...

 

A4 2.5 TDi estate is a good shout, especially if you can get a Quattro. Also the Octavia 4x4 and it's worth thinking about an E-class Merc. Plenty out there for cheap money.
