Passat 170 Estate, big towing load with that. Sold mine to my brother in law for £5k as he needed to safely tow a large caravan. Avensis estate was pants so dont go looking there.

Dont forget nose weight, commonly overlooked but you can easily be illegal. The nose weight on my XC90 is only 100kg, not a lot for a big car as I found out when I snapped a bolt holding my towbar on. Now have a nose weight gauge everytime.

Why not think about it a different way, take the weight of the car and trailer for your max towing weight, get the nose weight of the trailer with the car loaded and see what choice of car you have left. Also dont forget if your putting race equipment in the boot of the car this may change the handling. I used to pull a caravan with a Shogun fully loaded with a go kart and all equipment. Your friend might not want a 4x4 but he may not have a choice.

My next door neighbour has race car and pulls it with an old royal mail van. Which he converted into living area with side canopy etc... very nice i must say..

The nose weight is easy enough to alter depending on how you load the car on the trailer

Another thing some of you might need to consider is what you are entitled to drive if you have one of these newer licences that don't have Grandad entitlements.

I hear you now need to take a test if you want to tow.......

Skoda Octavia 4x4.

As mentioned above, depending upon his age he may have to take a test if he hasn't got D1 entitlement on his licence.

Fully loaded it can't weigh more than 3.5 tonnes that includes the towing car and the trailer

jaguar s type, 2.7 TD same engine as the range rover sport. my dad is getting 40MPG out of his without hanging around and is brilliant for cruising. (2007).

i was against him getting it at first mainly because it looks like an old man's car but it shifts very well, you'll never want to get out of it its that comfy. got a good towing weight to it too. don't knock it till you've tried it ;)

plenty of good suggestions here.  Personally I drive an A6 quattro 2.7 tdi, having replaced a similar A4 2.5tdi Quattro.  Both great tow cars;  neither particularly good on fuel though so worth considering what the car is being used for when not on towing duty.  A4 was manual and better about town, A6 auto and horrific about town but better on a run.  Also bear in mind some of the bigger things are in the high tax bracket as well.
