In the past , when a cable broke , I've driven home (approx 20 miles) on the heater cable

Definitely NOT recommended

also not adviced-

My `64 S had a weber on it- once the throttle cable broke outside the works entrance (big car park) I pushed the car across the road (gap in traffic) then fired it up and running on tickover- with the bonnet open. got going in 1st, opened the door and stood on the doorstep, with one hand steering and the other working the carb linkage, drove down to the car park (private road, of course) like I'd seen Martin Schanche do.

it was fine until the bonnet shut on my arm...............

The issue is mounting to the pedal.

I replaced the Hex gruscrew with an equivalent short Hex bolt locked in place with a spring washer and plain nut, the block just slides over the top of the throttle pedal and then lock it in the desired postion.

I drilled an extra hole through the bulkhead to accommodate the extra cable, the Sytec system is probably the neatest available.
