Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 998 engine had circlips to hold the gudgeons in place ...

My Haynes Metro manual shows a 998cc engine with circlips.

So are these the correct pistons? I've run a few google searches and they seem to be for the Rover Mini Mk1 999cc, but the only sites I've found are non-English so relying on google translate!

Yes, the stock 998 small bore UK engines had circlips fitted to the pistons to prevent the pin from floating too far, not brilliant, but that's how they are.

,,,,, also do you think I should use this type or others? will they be ok?

Sorry I missed this bit of your question.

IMO, Press Fits are better than Circlips, however, Buttons (with floating pins) are better than Press Fits (hope that makes sence)

I don't know of any supplier for the buttons I'm sorry to say, I turn my own.

The Gudgeon Pins from Brand to Brand / Type to Type are not all the same ID, so this probably makes it a little impractical for suppliers to keep.

Your machine shop man should be able to knock some up.

I'm fairly certain that your new pistons will fit your existing Rods, I don't think there's any need to go looking for late A+ Rods. The 'Brass Sleeve' that you've mentioned is in fact a Bronze Bush, that will press out, then your new Pins will most likely press in, in place of the Bronze Bush. Again, I'd suggest leaving it all for your machine shop man.

Well the pin slides straight through the whole with the bronze bush in there so without it would be wayy to big!

Ah, OK. Now I see where you have been coming from and your on going concerns!

Then I'd say the Piston manufacturer intended these to be fitted with Buttons.

Am I right in thinking 998 -

A series pistons & con rod = floating pin with circlips

A+ series pistons & con rod = press fit ?

I'm old & memory not good now a days

Its not quite as simple as that 998 A+ was circlip retention till about '86 ish. Then converted to press fit. In my experience press fit is the most reliable when the correct interference fit it used. This must be checked as they do vary. On a number of occassions a rod or two will need replacing as the little end hole is too big.
