Front Fog Light Wiring Questions.

electrical

Best Answer KernowCooper , 25 December 2014 - 10:35 PM

The live feed for the on/off switch     Usually taken from the dip beam circuit as fog lights are normally used on dip beam which will be the Blue/red wire, this is only the switch feed onto the relay so light load

Fuse?  2x55w bulbs will draw 9.16amps so a 10amp is to close to the current and likely to blow when initially switched so use a 15amp fuse

Position of the relay. If you put it inside there is nothing in there  to take a feed off I'd use, mount the relay in the engine compartment and take the feed off the live point on the solenoid where the original loom takes it 12v  from where the brown wires are

I've just got a set of Wipac S6078 fog lights for the mini but I have a few questions I need answering before I can get started.

I know there are a lot of threads like this but I couldn't find the answers I needed. I do apologise if it has been answerd and I've missed it.

I've got the basics when it comes to wiring it up and fitting it all in place. However there are 3 things that I am unsure of;

The live feed for the on/off switch. From what I have seen some people have said you can hook it up to the fuse box and draw the live feed from there. Others talk about cutting into the side light wiring to get switch power. Which is the best way to go about this?

Fuse? What size fuse would be recommended to fit onto the main power cable from the battery for the component.

Position of the relay. where have you fitted the relay? I'm not sure wheater to fit it under the bonnet or behind the dash?

Sorry if these are really simple questions. Last thing i want to do it cause my self trouble by mucking up the electrics. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers for the help. I've been able to wire up 90% of it. I was just wondering where about you cut into the blue red wire? Was in under the dash or in the engine bay?

Seeing as the switch is in the car use the big connection block at the base of the column, remove the pin from the connector use a wire spreader/stripper and expose the inner, slide some shrink wrap over cable, solder the new take off to the bare cable, shrink wrap the connection. Run the other side of the wire from the switch out to the repay.

I'd mount the relay to the inner wing, just below the wiring loom, i havent done this modification so cant advise where to cut the blue/red... however on a legal note, id call your insurer as you may find they wont pay out in the event of a bump... Had this before with a customer at a garage/ insurance storage yard i used to work in..

Hope this post is some use

Just to add. You may have already wired up but you should take a live for the switch from side light circuit as if real thick fog your dip/main will bounce back of the fog so you only have your sidelights on in day light

The above is fundamentally wrong.

Fog lights are only allowed to be illuminated when dipped headlights are on. Otherwise people will drive around on sidelights only in fog which is dangerous for obvious reasons!

It actually depends on where they are located, if you have a matching pair and they're near enough to the side of the car (50cm???) you can use them instead of headlights. Doubtless there's also a spec for the fitting height.

Cheers guys but its already wired up. I've wired it into the Dip beam as it was a nice easy feed to cut into.
