The pressure cap is fine and the rubber looks good too with no signs of damage, nor leaks once pressurised.

If I can't sort it tomorrow then going to have to get my Civic all legal again. At least that's reliable!

I had bubbling in expansion tank when first bought it. I literally filled the tank to max as was in the middle of min/Max, and that stopped it! This bleeding is a right PITA though.

The hoses feel like nothing in them, buy are getting hot, rad is getting hot top and bottom and heater is nice and toasted.

I'll try again tomorrow, but it's silly as I have like 30 seconds before the expansion tanks wants to blow!

I was getting quite a bit of air surfacing in expansion tank with engine running and squishing the top and bottom hose... do you think if I keep at it that will get most air out? As well as the bleed screws in between.

Only thing is ill have to do it with heater on full, but blower on 1 as as soon as put on 0 then that's when the coolant starts to build up past max on expansion tank

Think it's done now :P all seems okay. Took it for a run on motorway and traffic, stopping to check a few times and all was fine so hopefully done.

Next on to next problem... making sure fan is working :P

Fingers crossed......but keep checking over next few days incase more air surfaces to the top and causes the level to drop.......as said it takes a while and some patience to get it all out......I think some garages fill modern cars under some kind of pressure now to prevent airlocks and save time?

Yep, thanks! Was well happy when stopped when took it out for a good drive and each time the level and temp all good :)

In the month I've owed the car, I haven't heard or seen the fan on. Done just over 300 miles, but I haven't really been in traffic where it can overheat so they probably haven't needed to kick in yet :) that's next on list though to check. All fuses are okay, just want it to come on so I know it works.

Then fit my new wheels next weekend and have the height etc all set up :D

Oh yeah and the heater is even better! Lovely and toasted quickly

Only heard the fan come on in the summer on mine once or twice over several years but I don't have aircon which makes the fan work much harder to keep cool. Non-aircon R50 MINI's like mine have a single speed rad fan whereas MINI's with aircon have the 2-speed rad fan with a resistor that sometimes fails and no longer switches on the low speed.

The cooling fan first stage speed is like a base point to provide a constant regulation of temperature while 2nd stage fan is for peak temperatures reached when car is stationery or under load with say aircon on, etc, it quickly brings the temperature back to the regulation zone.
At above 105C the low speed should come on
At 112C the low and high speed should be on together

When you do check your fan you might find this post extracted from a Mini2 thread useful:-

MINI Temperature Gauge
As with many modern cars the MINI temp gauge doesn't show the correct water temp. It just sits in the middle regardless until the water temp goes through the roof then decides to move to the red at which time you've possibly already overheated.

There is a way to get your computer to show actual water temp on the digital speedo display:

With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button, while holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1.
The screen will say 'Test' and a number.
Scroll through, (pressing reset button) through to test 19 and wait a moment.
Wait and the message will say "log i-off" then "log i-on" and back to "log i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press again.
Now you can press reset to get to 7.0 and this is your water temp in Centigrade.
This is great for fault diagnosis. You will be able to see the thermostat controlling the temp as you drive and when stationary you can check the fan comes on at low speed at around 106C.

Alternatively some MINI owners fit a 'Scangauge 2' or similar which can display lots of this kind of useful info while driving:-

Great, thanks a lot Martin. That's put me at ease :)

Mines non air con too.

That scangauge2 looks good. Might order one of them.

Just ordered one. Seems a cool bit of kit for just over £100. Especially for the coolant temp. I do seem to remember Harry mentioning that the temp guage is rubbish and could be too late if it's starts to move over than half/normal on guage!

Probably a personal numberplate transfer with a V reg, the earliest MINI reg was a few on the 2001 Y Reg and 2001 '51' reg.......anything earlier were the original Rover MINI R50/53 prototypes sometimes seen in photos on P and R reg plates which were probably all scrapped.

In 50 years time rare early Y reg MINI's will maybe become the '1959' equivalent of the classic !!
