I've always thought that your way is correct - think they are like that in Vizards book, but no reason the other way wouldn't work also.

It's not my neatest work to be honest but each joint was welded on both sides with good penetration and no undercut so they should be plenty strong enough.

Some gussets on the rear subframe in the corners also help as well as a bit of seam welding
Putting some extra weld on the rear top shock mounts also helps

The rear radius arm brackets can fracture from the top (as installed) downwards where the 90 degree bend in the bracket is. To prevent this weld in a small triangular piece of 4 mm steel plate in the corner right at the top.
