More done!

Finished off changing the rusted and broken studs in the bumper for stainless ones:

Added some closed cell foam to protect the paintwork as well.

Got the fuel tank in. Its the only thing i've not 'restored'. I thought I'd leave it as it was as it wasn't too bad paint wise, and adds a little patina to the car.

Got the servo back in, all working now! Did some final bits on the engine bay. Not much more to do under there now...

Got some moooooooore done! Bit slower progress than I'd like today.

I was missing the foam pads for the side repeaters, so made some myself:

CAIORLC.jpg

and got them installed.

uVzngUD.jpg

Managed to get the gearlink steady bar attached. I stupidly didn't put the bolt through ready when I built the gearbox, so I had to undo all the nuts holding the manifolds on to give me room to swing the downpipe back far enough to slide it in!

q6rNgzN.jpg

Whilst I was under there I got the exhaust clamp on:

s25CERe.jpg

and started clamping down the battery cable

That's it for a while

Finally back at it today!

Exhaust is now fully on (no the car isn't purple underneath)

PQQcHJ8.jpg

Decided to get the carpet in, so popped on the seat brackets and the new gear lever gaiter:

TKoxR3t.jpg

zupxHYZ.jpg

Also got the heater in and pipes clamped down

DZS7tyZ.jpg

And popped a seat in so I could actually sit in if for the first time in 4 years!

So I thought I'd have a go at starting the engine.

Topped up the cooling system:

QnKVEEB.jpg

Discovered a nice water leak:

BFaeftt.jpg

Not quite enough to stop me this time!

Tried cranking it over and.....   ......nothing! It slowly built oil pressure, and I can hear the pump wiring and there is fuel at the rail. I did discover this:

s6QdIlG.jpg

(Cam sensor not connected)

Unfortunately that is the extent of my diagnostic capabilities for the moment as I'll need a multimeter and a freshly charged battery before I can continue

Another day, another problem.

The small leak has turned into a big one!

fMISzlI.jpg

uSQFMRo.jpg

X2AfsO3.jpg

Not only is it leaking from the thermostat housing, its also leaking from the head! That'll have to come off. curse my life

I did manage to get the car connected to the laptop, and it gave me some oil temp fault codes, but nothing was immediately obvious about why it wouldn't start. I did get the plugs to fire though

Back on it next year!

If you have a Payen composite gasket on it you should run it dry for around 30 seconds (just so the head is getting warm to the touch), let it cool fully and then retorque head nuts (ie individually back each on off and retighten to torque).

Then add coolant and after a full heat cycle retorque again.

For now I would see if the head will nip down a little further to stem the leak and get it running before stripping it.

Advice I've heard on here is to run it on plain water for a while too, to 'condition' the gasket.

You sure its the head and not just coola t that leaked from the thermostat and seeped in the gap between the head and block that the gasket doesnt cover? Ive been there, stabbed some tissues in there until it came back dry.

.

No, there was also a small leak just above the engine steady at the other end of the engine...

Back to the lockup!

Got a few bit done. First off I finally got the roll pins in for the gear lever:

ktmYlfG.jpg

frke05E.jpg

I then drained as much of the coolant as I could using a giant syringe and a pipe down into the bottom expansion tank hose:

23zgTZ2.jpg

Should just be enough if I want to take the head off.

Got all the gauges in for the dash, although none of them are secured due to a mismatch of nuts/clamps, all to be resolved soon

n5IfJwk.jpg

I then started to chase electrical gremlins. Got the brake lights working after adjusting the brake light switch position, tested the feed to the wiper motor as that wasn't working. It has power but doesn't move so will need to take it off:

Xj6sL5U.jpg

I had previously run power for the boot interior light but never tested it. All working and uses the boot alarm switch for the earth:

NVZGs5G.jpg

I also worked on the central locking. Got all the motors working (Including the one in the boot for the boot lock, and works well with the remote key fob. Just need to get the actual arms installed so they move the lock

iV3MG0T.jpg

cNXvzEJ.jpg

Pleased with the results for today, but still need to order a few more small parts

Working on the car in the rain isn't that much fun, but I can't not use the spare time i have to work on it! (its actually snowing in this pic)

5hfyU4i.jpg

Managed to get somewhere with the arches. Drilled out the holes, added some paint, then put some M4 rivnuts in:

MblbwNz.jpg

gKSmIMt.jpg

E0o4G1k.jpg

CupKXf5.jpg

Will do the other side when I get the car on its wheels again. Turned my attention to the engine. I tested the injectors and they are pumping fuel:

Not sure what to try now as the engine still doesn't start....

Attention to detail is amazing.

I have a few questions:

What type of seal between wheel arch and body?

How does the boot central locking catch work? If it's not a trade secret.

Looks like a great place store a classic mini if you don't have your own garage. Is there power to the containers?

This is the seal I used:

http://minispares.co...ng/SPL0059.aspx

Its a bit thicker than standard but looks good. I had to superglue it onto the arch though, and have cut-outs where the holes are.

Boot lock isn't much of a secret yet, but essentially it will push a pin forward to stop the latch turning (might be something I end up selling as a kit)

Its just a container in an old factory, no power at all!
