I have some sympathy with Nick, that  this a topic that never seems to get any further. Perhaps it's inevitable, even desirable, for new generations to fall under the spell of the little rot boxes.

You can't have HP without torque and gearing can match a high revving little engine against a bigger, torquey  one with the same bhp.  Though if they both have to sit on top of a 4 speed transmission (pinched from an even more ancient Austin and splashing about in engine oil) then having power you can access without reaching for another ratio is good. I like to think of a turbo in a Mini as a pneumatic overdrive as much as a route to too much power.

Why 200 BHP? Our BMW e46 330D, with 184 BHP as standard, is more than quick enough for road use, and that weighs quite a bit more than a mini ever will. :shy:  :bah:

but it will be running about 300ft/lb torque and that's what makes the difference in the real world, bhp is a pointless figure.

I understand about BHP and torque, but the weight difference will make a huge difference. I would go for a Honda conversion for that kind of power, it has far more potential.

I looked down the vtec and redtop route and yea they are more reliable and have good potential but some people like to see how far they can push the classic engine. Its more impressive to get 200+ from an a block then just dumping another honda engine into the mini.

I went down the route of the specialist components k series 16v twin cam bike head conversion. So you still keep the classic engine but with a highly modded head. And considering they had a turbo'd a series engine in a mini at there workshop that had been tested to around 320 bhp.... its more than possible to get 200+ from this conversion.

There's a yellow 16v turbo on youtube, which is running 250+ bhp. I think 'philster' owns that car on Turbo Minis, or take a look at 'The Don', It's insane. :gimme:

yup, that'll be jimsters 16v turbo.

There's probably around 10 of us running over 200hp, maybe a few more. Some of us sticking 5 port and others going the 16v route.

Yeah that's Johns own car, used to be a common sight at the showdown years ago in nat asp form. I've not seen him out in it since SC took off which is both a good thing and a bad thing, was a quick car back then.

The yellow one they were referring to above as being over 250hp in the youtube vids will be Jimsters.

Sorry, if this is the car I'm thinking it is it doesn't qualify in this thread.

It's been measured to be outside the 200 BHP Bracket.

I've just finished rebuilding my engine after 6 years of abuse, as It's long overdue a freshen up, as it's done over 20k now.

Im running the k head and turbo'd mine and it's been the most reliable setup I've had in the car to date. No idea on power but it's well over the 200hp mark with the 30psi going through it. :-)

It can be done, and doesn't have to cost the earth, you just have to focus your spending on the right parts.

Howley Racing we're making over 200hp, on a 5 port head and a single 1 3/4" carb in the early 80's, for the Group A Metro Turbo's.
With over 30 years of development in Turbos, cams, heads etc it's more than possible to get well over that. With a Modern head, such as the popular BMW K heads, you can add another possible 100hp to that .....
Besides, it's not a Mini without an A-Series !
Phil.

Yes ! I was lucky enough to meet Phil Hepworth a few times and spoke to him extensively about these engines. He worked for Howley racing and supplied the engines for these cars.

Phil.
