Trying To Start Mini After Engine/carb Rebuild

engine

Update: After checking that the valves are timed correctly, I dont think its cam timing. After adjusting the clearances however, it almost starts, coughs and sputters when i ive it throttle, but doesnt quite go.

I'm thinking it may be carb adjustments now

Hi guys, finally got round to joining the mini forum rather than just reading previous posts!

Basically I have a 1991 rover mini cooper that I’ve just spent ages rebuilding the engine on, problem is I can’t get it to start at the moment

Turns over great, sparks fine and its getting fuel to the cylinders, occasionally the engine will splutter a little exhaust fumes will come out the exhaust but not consistently and I did get it going briefly the other day but really rough and it didn’t last long. I’ve checked the firing order and distributor drive shaft, and I’m pretty sure they’re correct, played with the carb a little and the mixtures set pretty rich I think.

My thoughts are its timing issue as I don’t have a given value for static timing so I’ve tried 4 degrees and 8 but to no avail (It has Lucas electronic ignition by the way), or perhaps valve clearances?

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

8degs static would start any A series, are you sure its timed on No1 cylinder and not No4 ? with the leads at 1 oclock for no 1 cyl on the cap and in a anti clockwise 3-4-2

Firing order is correct, and i set it against number 1 cylinder by feeling the compression build up in the piston to confirm it was on the right stroke, however I will double check this with the valves

How did you time the cam to the crank?

I rebuilt the engine a few months ago, I remember installing it and lining up marks but it's completely possible it was installed incorrectly, is there an easy way to check this before I go taking the radiator out etc?

Fixed: turned out to be a short circuit that was draining the power, presumably leading to a slightly to weak spark
