This is my first time posting, I was putting my engine and gearbox back together yesterday and has a bit of a nightmare, I've managed to damage the metal ring (please see attached image) that the oil seal sits up against on the primary gear. I can't seem to find the ring as a separate part anywhere and I don't really want to fork out for a new primary gear if I don't have to.

Does anyone know where I could get another one or does anyone have one I could buy.

Thanks for the help in advance

Dan

Which metal ring do you mean? http://www.minispare...ic/primary.aspx

Its the one circled in red in the picture I've attached. Its part of the primary gear assembly by the looks of it, I can't find it anywhere on the Minispares site.

It is actually part of the primary gear, you will need a new gear if the damage is bad.

Upload a photo of the damage.

Its pretty damaged, the idler gear has basically dug into it as I was tightening the box and block together, bit of a rookie error really.

Would it be possible to buy a 998 primary gear and swap the ring out? I'm not planning on keeping the engine for that much longer so avoiding paying big money for a new 1275 primary gear would be preferable?

What engine do you have?

Was the gear not shimmed correctly?

Pretty sure 998 and 1275 primary gears are different.

Its a 1275, I think the shimming is fine, I left it as it was. The engine and gearbox were both fine, I took it all apart to put a new cam in.

From what I understand the only difference between the 998 and 1275 is the internal bushes.

You need to measure the shimming to make absolutely sure everything works as it should or things like this happen:

OohBugger.jpg

It sounded like a straight cut box - just not for very long. AndyMiniMad wrote a fantastic engine building thread which details exactly how to set it up here: http://www.theminifo...-just-building/

The 1275 Primary Gears are different as the crank is bigger - it's 1.625" as opposed to 1.5". Guessworks on here has some Primaries available on his website here: http://www.guess-wor...play.htm?id=199

It's not worth guessing - you need to set it up properly. Have fun!

Dan,

The damaged ring is there as an oil thrower, to help keep some oil off the oil seal.

Was not fitted to earlier engines, I think it is a press fit onto the primary gear? If you can get the damaged ring off without touching the polished area that is used for the oil seal then you may be able to use the same primary gear.

Others may be able to confirm, I have not done this mod.

As Carbon hs said, early cars didn't have them, but good idea to have one there.

A 998 and a 1275 slinger will inter-change, even A and A+ - they were all the same.

You can remove it, 'panel beat it' true again and re-fit it. Even if it's not 100% true, don't loose any sleep over it, just be sure that it's clear of the seal when all fitted up.

Here's the factory low-down on the slinger (not much help I know, but maybe of interest)

Thanks for all the input MrBounce, Carbon and Moke Spider. I think I've figured out what I'm going to do.

If it's bent remove it....

The rear (clutch) seal should not touch it at all...

Most, if not all, Straight cut primary gears don't have it...

If you do refit it, make sure you don't block the oil holes with it.

If I don't replace it, is it likely to cause any problems with oil coming past the clutch seal?

not really it just helps the seal not to quite as much work.
